Dear Teachers,

A group of teachers in NSW, Victoria and Tasmania, (mostly retired primary school teachers & Principals) started an association to improve the education system. The Australian Association of Reading Teachers (AART) decided to focus on the teaching and learning of reading, writing and spelling because these are the skills that all other school learning depends. The problems encountered by a student during their first year of formal schooling and the effect of OBE on the student's last year of formal schooling are both the result of the same underlying cause - that effective teaching and learning programs were thrown out and replaced by ineffective educational experiments.

AART puts out a monthly newsletter which I write and e-mail to over 100 teachers as well as reading researchers, Education politicians and bureaucrats and journalists. I'm not a teacher and while I'm happy to continue writing the newsletter and expanding the membership base, the role of lobbying for change should be undertaken by teachers.

I suggest that either the PLATO primary teachers join AART or I fold the AART membership into PLATO. This large base of teachers from all States & Territories will give primary teachers a strong base from which to lobby for change.

Regards,

Yvonne Meyer
